SaniFruit

Role

Designer and Researcher

Timelines

January 2021-April 2021

SaniFuit was created as part of a curriculum requirement for an Operations Management course. In a team of 6, we were asked to ideate a new product and build a business case. SaniFruit is a kitchen appliance used to clean bacteria and residue off of fruits and vegetables, particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background

Conducted research via survey with 30 participants from our target group (millennial demographic) and identified the prioritization of needs to guide the team in product design

Concept 1: UV-C + Air jets

Concept 2: UV-C + Water Jets

Concept 3: Oscillating bowl with spray nozzle and cleaning solution reservoir

Benchmarking

This patented system is a produce washer and grinder that has a rotating plate with clean water that cycles in from a spray nozzle. The build contains a washing container, discharge hole, rotating plate spray nozzle, and grinder. The motor spins the plate and the produce shifts in the bowl until it is clean, and then it is pushed out through the gears that grind it. This patent was filed in 2008 and granted in 2011 in South Korea, and it has legal IP Right Cessation status.

This patented system consists of an ultrasonic washing machine that is made for textiles but has very similar functionality as the other concepts for produce. The nanobubbles are used to clean very intricate areas through vibrations from ultrasonic frequency. The air is fed into the device from the outside through a bubble device. The patent was filed in 1985 and granted in 1990 by Japanese owners.

Assessing primary, secondary, and tertiary needs for each concept

Each concept was ranked against the initial list of needs to help identify the design that should be developed and assessed further.
